"Today"

Today, I see myself in my dream home. Warm light fills the room as the morning sun peeks through the curtains. I wake up to the sound of my kids’ laughter echoing from downstairs, mixing with the sounds of food being made. I'm greeted by the smells of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon.

As I descend the staircase, the wooden steps creak softly under my feet. My wife stands at the kitchen counter, her hair catching the morning light, a smile spreading across her face as she sees me. “Good morning,” I say, my voice still heavy from sleep. With a warm voice, she says it again to me, and our children join in with their own happy "Good morning!".

I walk over to my wife and kiss her gently on the cheek. The morning routine continues with a comforting rhythm. We send the kids off to school, their backpacks bouncing as they run to the bus. It’s Friday, and the promise of the weekend lingers in the air.

I woke up in a new bed today, with crisp, chilly sheets. I turned to face my wife on my right, but there's nothing in the empty spot next to me. "On weekends, she usually wakes up late," I think to myself, confusedly. I got out of bed, the floorboards cooled beneath my feet and headed toward the door.

Down the hallway, I hear my wife’s laughter, a sound that always brings a smile to my face. As I step out of the room, I see three shadows dancing along the walls, accompanied by three distinct waves of laughter. I make my way down the stairs, the laughter growing louder with each step.

At the bottom of the stairs, I see the back of a woman standing by the kitchen counter. Her figure is familiar yet somehow different. I continue forward, the light from the kitchen illuminating her face. It’s my beautiful wife, her smile radiant in the morning light. “Good morning,” I say, my voice cracking slightly. “Good morning,” she replies, and the three distinct voices join in.

I squint, trying to make out the faces, and with a blink, they come into focus. It’s our friends, their faces lit up with joy. “Oh right, we’re at a cabin for the three-day weekend,” I remember, a wave of excitement washing over me. Today will be a fun day!
